The picturesque town of Frederiksted is filled with captivating pockets of natural beauty that are fit to be captured on canvas, or maybe even on an empty wall or other vacant public space. Artist Hakim Callwood hooked up with Clean Sweep Frederiksted and created two such murals that are catching eyes in the sleepy town.

Art organizations and local artists are intentionally adding street or public art across St. Croix to boost community morale. The booming art scene is most notable in Frederiksted town, St. Croix’s western twin town that is historically known as Freedom City.

University of the Virgin Islands marine scientist Howard Forbes Jr. received a grant to buy glass crushing machines that convert glass bottles into a sustainable substitute for sand in sand bags. Clean Sweep Frederiksted will receive one of the machines for its work.

Clean Sweep Frederiksted’s Urban Garden Workforce Development Program that taught locals how to do their own urban gardening, saving money and ensuring more families have access to healthy food in a food desert.

PangeaSeed Foundation, in collaboration with Clean Sweep Frederiksted, will be making waves in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands with their public art program, “Sea Walls: Artists For Oceans.”

The EPA honored just two organizations, including Clean Sweep Frederiksted, in the U.S. Virgin Islands with the Environmental Champion Awards.
